- Title: Mimetes cucullatus (syn. M. lyrigera), Common Pagoda, Red Bottlebrush, ‘Rooi stompie’
- Description: Mimetes cucullatus (syn. M. lyrigera) This bushy shrub of up to 1.5 m responds well to hard pruning, having a persistent rootstock from which new shoots will arise. The bright red terminal leaf bracts have a rounded, hooded appearance and encase white-tufted flowers that are produced year round, especially during the spring months. Young leaf growth is also red. There are colour variants, with some nurseries offering ‘orange’ forms. (Photo depicts a massed display of young plants in a wholsale nursery, Victoria, Australia. A colourful garden shrub, M. cucullatus is highly regarded for picking purposes. It is ideally grown in a sunny position with reasonably good soil that is moisture-retentive yet free-draining. Some summer watering may be desirable in dry climates, as it is not a drought-tolerant plant. It is, however, a good subject for coastal gardens.
