Leucospermum reflexum var. luteum

Email

  • Title:  Leucospermum reflexum var. luteum
  • Description:  This exceptionally beautiful variety was discovered by South African botanists in the wild in 1973. It has since become widely cultivated in several countries, and in some is simply known as ‘Cape Gold’. The flower heads are similar in shape to the more common L. reflexum described above, but are a lovely, clear golden-yellow colour and are borne in profusion over late spring and early summer. They are used for commercial picking purposes in some countries. L. reflexum var. luteum has paler, more silver-green foliage than the usual L. reflexum species and is less vigorous, usually not exceeding 2 m high but still a bushy shrub under cultivation. This lovely leucospermum withstands wind well (including salt-laden) but tends to be a little more prone to frost damage than the usual L. reflexum. Successful cultivation requires a sunny position with good drainage.
