Hakea rhombales

Email

  • Title:  Hakea rhombales
  • Description:  A relatively rare species found in central areas of Western Australia, it has been included for its distinctive flower colouring and leaves. Growing to 2 m or less, it has a lignotuber so withstands both fire and hard pruning. Leaves are terete (round in cross section) and the prominent purplish-pink flowers are produced en masse in the leaf axils over winter. The example illustrated was photographed at Kings Park Botanic Gardens in Perth, W.A. Arid conditions are tolerated, as are light frosts. Well-drained, sandy soils and sunny positions are pre-requisites for successful cultivation.
