  • Title:  Protea magnifica (syn. P. barbigera), Queen Protea, Woolly Beard Protea, Wolbaardsuikerbos
  • Description:  A strikingly beautiful protea species, the Queen protea is extremely variable in flower size and colour as well as growth habit. Our image is of a particularly good form of the rich, pinkish-red version. Most Protea magnifica grow to 2m or more in both height and width. The main flowering time is spring to early summer. Flower size is variable but is frequently 15cm wide with a greater length. Foliage is thick and leathery and normally quite glaucous. Found growing at high altitudes in South Africa's Cape province, it can withstand hard frosts once established. Well-drained, acidic soils in temperate climates suit. Evergreen. Medium hardy.
