  • Title:  Hakea victoria, Royal hakea
  • Description:  Named in hour of Queen Victoria, this species has been described as the most beautiful foliage plant of the protea family. A very distinctive shrub with large, leathery, brightly coloured leaves that have waved, prickly margins. These are initially green, lower ones becoming bright yellow in the first year, orange the next, until, in the third year the when the leaves are lower on branches, they become a vivid red. All colours are seen at once, giving a delightful, graduated effect. Cream flowers are borne on pink stems in spring. In nature this species forms an erect shrub of 2.5 m but is usually bushier under cultivation. Leaf colour is better under hard conditions, with good garden soils not producing much colour. Very well drained soils in full sun are required and light frosts are tolerated.
