  • Description:  A spectacular banksia species and deservedly popular as a cut flower, B. coccinea has cylindrical flower heads produced from late winter into early summer. On long, sturdy stems up to 1 m long, they open from woolly grey buds and vary in colour from bright orange through rich scarlet to almost crimson-red. They are borne from late winter to early summer with a spring peak and are used commercially for cut flowers in several countries. The young growth is an attractive, velvety bronze colour. An erect shrub to 3 m in height, regular pruning keep it more compact. It is tolerant of occasional frosts of up to -5ºC and requires well-drained, light or sandy soils, full sun and protection from heavy winds.
