  • Description:  Banksia spinulosa Hairpin banksia Generally a compact shrub of up to 2 m in height, B. spinulosa is a well known species that occurs naturally throughout eastern Australia. Forms are variable, ranging up to 6 m in height. ‘Austraflora Birthday Candles’ is popular for its low growing habit of up to 2 m wide and 40 cm high. Large, cylindrical flower cones can measure 18cm long and 8cm in diameter, are produced over autumn and winter and are attractive to nectar seeking birds. Colour is variable, from soft gold through orange-red shadings. The hooked black styles have given rise to the common name ‘hairpin banksia’. Easily grown, in most well-drained soils in sunny positions and is a frost-hardy species. Hard pruning is tolerated.
