Email

  • Title:  Banksia candolleana, Propeller banksia
  • Description:  The common name of this Western Australian banksia species refers to the propeller-shaped seed head. A low, semi-prostrate, spreading shrub of up to 1 m high and 2 m ft) or more wide it is well-suited to planting on slopes, as taller groundcover or in larger rock gardens. Flower buds are reminiscent of little green pine cones and open to attractive, golden yellow flower spikes 8 cm long on short stems over autumn and early winter, with some flowers occurring in spring. Well-drained, sandy soils and sunny positions are preferred. Light frosts are tolerated. As this species has a lignotuber it can be pruned heavily to encourage branching.
