Leucadendron discolor, Piketburg conebush, Rooiitolbos

Email

  • Title:  Leucadendron discolor, Piketburg conebush, Rooiitolbos
  • Description:  The male form of this species is particularly colourful with its strawberry-like flower cones and has been used extensively in hybridising programmes, particularly in South Africa. The male flower cones blacken off fairly quickly as they age which limits their commercial usefulness. It is essential to pick at an early stage of development to prolong useful vase life. Female forms have greenish-white bracts surrounding a green cone and have longer stems plus a longer vase life making them useful for picking. This is a shrub of 1.5 m – 2 m in height with bushy to erect growth and is usually frost hardy to -4 ºC and easily grown in most well drained, sunny positions.
